As many now know, we make our crib mattresses (all our mattresses, actually) with organic cotton. Cotton breathes well, helps maintain humidity and balanced temperatures and has the ideal density for a mattress.
But organic cotton has something extra. Wait a minute, I should say organic cotton doesn’t have something extra – pesticides. That’s not the only something extra our mattresses don’t have, but it’s at the top of our undesirable list.
We, of course, are not the only ones concerned with pesticides. Various groups have been up in arms about them since they were first used.
But the EPA announced today that “After years of delay, EPA is aggressively moving forward by ordering the testing of a number of pesticide chemicals for hormone effects.”
The ‘hormone effects being referred to regulate growth, metabolism and reproduction. Read the EPA announcement for more info.
Some of the chemicals used in most crib mattresses have already been banned – maybe more will meet the same fate.
