Ask Naturepedic: How Do I Clean My Naturepedic Organic Mattress?

When you purchase an organic mattress from Naturepedic, it’s a big deal. Your mattress is an investment in safer, healthier sleep for your family. Keeping your mattress clean and hygienic will help to extend the life of your product and keep it in good shape.

In this blog post, we’ll teach you how to clean and protect our certified organic baby, kids and adult mattresses. We hope you’ll learn at least one new thing about how to properly care for your Naturepedic!  

A waterproof crib mattress is quick and simple to clean: wipe the surface with a damp cloth, using mild detergent on soiled surfaces. You can also wipe the crib mattress with hydrogen peroxide to disinfect. Our food-grade polyethelyne waterproofing derived from non-GMO sugarcane truly makes clean-up a snap – without the use of the vinyl/PVC or phthalates found in conventional waterproof crib mattresses. 

Quilted crib mattresses are not waterproof. For these models you may spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent as needed. However, moisture in the mattress may result in mold or bacterial growth. To prevent this level of damage we recommend using a Naturepedic organic waterproof protector to keep the crib mattress safe from liquids. 

• Waterproof models: Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, sanitize with peroxide
• Quilted models: Spot clean only, protect with a waterproof pad

The 2-in-1 Organic Kids Mattress is designed with a waterproof side and a non-waterproof quilted side. The waterproof side of the mattress is easy to clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Simply wipe it clean and use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect (optional). Take care to prevent moisture from entering the mattress at the seams.

The quilted side, as well as other kids mattresses that are not waterproof, are spot-clean only. Using a damp rag and mild detergent, you can lift minor soiling and stains. A heavily soiled mattress may become hazardous, as urine or other spills and messes can penetrate the mattress and result in bacterial growth.

To prevent damage to your mattress, use a waterproof protector pad. Our kids waterproof protector pads are made from two laters of cozy-soft GOTS certified organic cotton with an ultra-thin waterproof layer in the middle. Plus, they're machine washable! You can also use an extra spin cycle in the washer before tumble drying to cut down on drying time. If your kids mattress has a pillowtop or other luxury topper, please spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. 

• 2-in-1 model: Wipe waterproof side with mild soap and water, spot clean quilted side
• Non-waterproof models: Spot clean only, use a waterproof or flannel pad to protect 

Just like the non-waterproof kids mattresses, all adult mattresses and luxury toppers are spot clean only! This means that to truly protect your investment, you should use an organic waterproof mattress protector over your mattress to keep it safe from any spills. You never know when a mess can happen, especially if you have pets or kids! A waterproof protection pad can also help block bodily oils, perspiration, cosmetic residue and more from penetrating the surface of the mattress.

We can’t forget about our oh-so-comfy organic pillows! Our pillows are spot-clean only. However, some of them (like our award-winning Organic Adjustable Latex Pillow) have an outer casing that is machine washable and dryable.
