Are Organic Mattresses Worth The Money?

When you first discover the world of organic mattresses, there’s a little bit of sticker shock. What could possibly be so different about organic mattresses? What are the benefits you get from the cost? And the biggest question on everyone’s mind… is an organic mattress worth the cost? Obviously, we believe that organic mattresses are well worth the money you pay, and there are several reasons why. Organic mattresses are made with higher quality materials that often come at a higher cost than cheaply made synthetics. Organic mattresses contain natural materials that smolder instead of ignite, which means they are made without toxic flame retardant chemicals. And organic mattresses don’t off-gas harmful chemicals that can impact your health. We believe organic mattresses are an investment in your health, and we hope that by the end of this blog post you’ll agree with us and learn one new thing about organic mattresses that you didn’t know before. Organic Mattresses Are Made[…]

Finding the Perfect Couples Mattress

Finding the right mattress for you and your partner has more to it than just picking a comfort level that sounds nice and feels okay in the showroom. You can customize your experience with toppers or different pillows, but sometimes couples just sleep differently, making the search for the perfect mattress more difficult. Is Your Mattress Naughty or Nice?

Santa might see when you’re sleeping, but can he see what you’re sleeping on? Find out if your mattress is a true gift or if it’s worse than a lump of coal! The Mattress Naughty List At Naturepedic, we stick to a very strict list of materials we never use in our mattresses. We consider these unacceptable in our mattresses and accessories and you can trust that we do not use any of them in our GOTS certified organic factory. – Polyurethane Foam: This includes memory foam, bio-based or soybean foam, or “eco” foam blends. These “plant-based” foams are actually just polyurethane foam with a little soybean oil added in. The fact of the matter is that polyurethane foam is highly flammable and comes with a pile of flame retardant chemical ingredients to meet flammability regulations. You definitely don’t want to be sleeping on that. – Flame Retardant Chemicals: Naturepedic meets all federal flammability regulations without the need for flame[…]

Naturepedic Earns SFC’s Exemplary Gold Recognition

Naturepedic uses healthier materials like certified organic cotton to safeguard human health and wellbeing. Our business practices nurture and protect the planet. We support, and promote, environmental & social causes. All of these behaviors are core to the company’s existence, part of who we are and what we do. That said it’s still gratifying to get publicly recognized for doing them. Naturepedic has earned Gold Exemplary Recognition from the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC), an organization promoting the use of healthier materials and sustainable business practices by companies in the home furnishings sectors. Naturepedic is the only Gold Exemplary mattress company among the SFC’s nearly 400 member companies. To earn the recognition, Naturepedic documented sustainability efforts in production, operations and outreach and then submitted the information to an SFC audit. After the audit, Naturepedic was given the gold, and also some kind words. “Naturepedic is a true innovator and leader in our industry,” said SFC Standards Committee Chairman Gat Caperton. “Their[…]

What You Should Know About Mattress Eco-Terms

Organic. I try not to be surprised by what I see labeled as an “organic” mattress. I try. The truth is, though, I’ve seen “organic” used with such reckless abandon on mattresses that I can only shake my head and sigh. With food and unprocessed agricultural products like wool, “organic” requires meeting National Organic Program (NOP) standards of the USDA. Non-food processed items, however, are different; the USDA does not certify finished products like textiles, yarns, shirts or mattresses as organic. Consumers should instead demand Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifications for mattresses. Without these third-party certifications, there is little way to know how “organic” a mattress is. Be cautious, however, of a GOTS logo used in reference to only a specific component such as the fabric that the mattress maker presumably purchased from a vendor. Not only is that against the rules of GOTS (a mattress must be GOTS-certified to display that GOTS[…]

Ask Naturepedic: What Is Food-Grade Polyethylene?

At Naturepedic, we’re all about crib mattress safety. You trust us to bring you a safer option for your little one’s sleep, wrapped up in all the organic goodness nature offers. You may have seen that we use food-grade polyethylene in our mattresses, and we sometimes get questions about what polyethylene is. We hope that this blog post will help answer any questions you have about the use of food grade polyethylene. It sounds like polyurethane, are they the same thing? At Naturepedic, we don’t use polyurethane foam in any form, including memory foam, plant based or bio-based foam, soybean foam, etc. These are all polyurethane foams that are highly flammable and require flame retardant chemicals to meet flammability standards. We never use polyurethane foam or flame retardants. This is where some of the concern comes from when parents learn we use polyethylene. It sounds very similar in name but is a completely different type of material. What is polyethylene?[…]

Why Can’t You Look Under the Hood of Your Organic Mattress?

Would you purchase a car without looking under the hood and making sure that everything was in working order? While many mattress companies offer a trial period when you can return your bed, there’s no mattress lemon law to protect you from buying a mattress with components you don’t like. Since you’d never buy a car without looking under the hood, why not do the same with your organic mattress? Naturepedic lets you look under the hood in more ways than one. Our certified GOTS mattresses ensure a pure and organic mattress, while Bedfax labels fully disclose our materials. In addition, we stand by a list of materials that you will never find in our mattresses, so you can rest assured that you’re not sleeping on a lemon. For a literal look under the hood, the EOS® Organic Sleep System mattresses let you see the inside components of your mattress and allow you to choose exactly what goes into your[…]

Organic vs. GOTS Organic Mattresses

If someone tries to sell you a shirt and claims it is absolutely organic, how do you know? You probably don’t know the salesperson individually and given he or she has an interest in getting you to purchase the product, is their word enough? An organic t-shirt looks like a non-organic one, after all. Now take a mattress, larger and more complicated. How do you know what’s really inside and outside that product. What does “organic mattress” even mean? Maybe what they are calling organic is different than your idea of organic, so again, how do you know it’s organic? The truth? Without trustworthy verification, it’s pretty much impossible. Got GOTS? That is why the Global Organic Textile Standard, or GOTS, is essential. GOTS certifies textiles and fabrics, apparel and mattresses. With GOTS, a trained, independent examiner ensures everything adds up and meets an established standard viewable by anyone. The books, systems, and physical manufacturing facility and its processes are[…]

May is Better Sleep Month, an informational month-long celebration of healthier sleep habits. Sleep is an important aspect of mental and physical health, and it’s important to understand the impact that our sleep has on our daily life. In our fast-paced busy society, we try to get ahead on our jam-packed schedules by cutting sleep before cutting commitments. We convince ourselves we only need a few hours, or that we’re getting a full night’s sleep even though we catch up on emails in bed or hit snooze for an hour. Need a refresher? Read our Safe Healthy Sleep Resolutions blog post from January! How much sleep do we need? The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for adults age 18 to 64.
