Naturepedic 2016 Sustainability Report

When you work around big bales of fluffy organic cotton like I do, you’re definitely in tune with Naturepedic’s connection to the environment and sustainability. Many people see only the final product, however. Our yearly Sustainability Report, then, is our way of showing everyone the greenery, so to speak, happening before that mattress is made. All of our mattresses are made at a single manufacturing facility in Ohio, and since we own the building, we control the processes. That means no pesticides on our lawn, environmentally friendly cleaning products, energy efficient lighting. If we see something to be improved, we improve it. Nonetheless, we don’t grow our own cotton, harvest our own rubber tree milk for our certified organic latex, weave our own certified organic fabrics, or raise our own happy sheep for wool (although we do make our own encased coils). For the materials like these, we find suppliers who care as much about the environment as we do.[…]

Why Are Organic Mattresses More Expensive?

Being blunt but honest, few people would call Naturepedic organic mattresses inexpensive. While we would put the quality and comfort of our hand-assembled mattresses against luxury brands that retail in excess of $20,000 (and we’re nowhere close to that), we nonetheless acknowledge you can drop into a mattress outlet today and walk out with a Queen size adult mattress for $400 or so. Shopping by price alone, you wouldn’t go for an organic mattress. So, why choose organic over that $400 bed? What do you get for the extra money? The truth is, you get a lot, and probably more than you might realize. Cleaner Materials Naturepedic uses organic cotton, latex, and wool, and not surprisingly these materials cost more. Organic cotton, for example, only makes up a little more than 1% of the entire global cotton production (according to trade organization Textile Exchange), so the supply and demand for organic cotton increases costs. Additionally, we only use third-party certified[…]

Why Naturepedic Is A Notch Above The Rest

Debra Lynn Dadd is a well-known author who recommends safer, nontoxic products for people who want a healthier lifestyle. She literally wrote the book on toxic chemicals in consumer products! She’s been a friend of our company for years and we’re proud to be recommended by her program. Discover more about what she thinks of our company in this guest blog. I’ve been recommending nontoxic products for more than thirty years, so I have a pretty good idea of what to look for when choosing safer products. After three decades of recommending nontoxic products through books, and then in my online directory Debra’s List (www.debralist.com), In January 2016 I decided to create an official program called Debra Lynn Dadd Recommended Products. I’ve never been a fan of seals of approval because while seals say they meet a standard, they don’t ever give details. Debra Lynn Dadd Recommended Products goes way beyond a seal of approval. It’s a Letter of Recommendation[…]

Naturepedic Earns SFC’s Exemplary Gold Recognition

Naturepedic uses healthier materials like certified organic cotton to safeguard human health and wellbeing. Our business practices nurture and protect the planet. We support, and promote, environmental & social causes. All of these behaviors are core to the company’s existence, part of who we are and what we do. That said it’s still gratifying to get publicly recognized for doing them. Naturepedic has earned Gold Exemplary Recognition from the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC), an organization promoting the use of healthier materials and sustainable business practices by companies in the home furnishings sectors. Naturepedic is the only Gold Exemplary mattress company among the SFC’s nearly 400 member companies. To earn the recognition, Naturepedic documented sustainability efforts in production, operations and outreach and then submitted the information to an SFC audit. After the audit, Naturepedic was given the gold, and also some kind words. “Naturepedic is a true innovator and leader in our industry,” said SFC Standards Committee Chairman Gat Caperton. “Their[…]

Why Can’t You Look Under the Hood of Your Organic Mattress?

Would you purchase a car without looking under the hood and making sure that everything was in working order? While many mattress companies offer a trial period when you can return your bed, there’s no mattress lemon law to protect you from buying a mattress with components you don’t like. Since you’d never buy a car without looking under the hood, why not do the same with your organic mattress? Naturepedic lets you look under the hood in more ways than one. Our certified GOTS mattresses ensure a pure and organic mattress, while Bedfax labels fully disclose our materials. In addition, we stand by a list of materials that you will never find in our mattresses, so you can rest assured that you’re not sleeping on a lemon. For a literal look under the hood, the EOS® Organic Sleep System mattresses let you see the inside components of your mattress and allow you to choose exactly what goes into your[…]

Naturepedic Awarded the EMA Healthy Family Seal

The entertainment industry, from music to movies to original programming delivered on cable, network and new media platforms, holds influence on how people view their world. Understanding how media shapes opinions, in 1989 entertainment executive Alan Horn and wife Cindy, along with iconic writer and producer Norman Lear (yes, that Norman Lear of All in the Family, The Jeffersons, One Day At A Time, and more) and wife Lyn founded the Environmental Media Association (EMA). The EMA leverages the considerable power of the entertainment industry to affect environmental change. This change is not just within the industry through the encouragement of more responsible production methods, but also with the general public by using celebrity power to educate and inform. The EMA even works with writers and directors to help integrate responsible environmental messaging into movies and television. As part of the EMA’s ongoing dedication to promote a healthier planet with healthier people, the organization launched the EMA Healthy Family Seal.[…]

Organic vs. GOTS Organic Mattresses

If someone tries to sell you a shirt and claims it is absolutely organic, how do you know? You probably don’t know the salesperson individually and given he or she has an interest in getting you to purchase the product, is their word enough? An organic t-shirt looks like a non-organic one, after all. Now take a mattress, larger and more complicated. How do you know what’s really inside and outside that product. What does “organic mattress” even mean? Maybe what they are calling organic is different than your idea of organic, so again, how do you know it’s organic? The truth? Without trustworthy verification, it’s pretty much impossible. Got GOTS? That is why the Global Organic Textile Standard, or GOTS, is essential. GOTS certifies textiles and fabrics, apparel and mattresses. With GOTS, a trained, independent examiner ensures everything adds up and meets an established standard viewable by anyone. The books, systems, and physical manufacturing facility and its processes are[…]

Naturepedic Mattresses Are Now MADE SAFE Certified

We have big news: Our mattresses are the first in the country to be MADE SAFE certified! Since our inception, we’ve taken every step possible to ensure that the materials in our mattresses are as safe as possible. After all, we got our start after our founder Barry Cik set out to create a mattress he would allow his grandchild to sleep on that wasn’t made with toxic chemicals or questionable materials. Naturepedic has always been one of the few companies that make mattresses certified in their entirety to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) – the organic standard for mattresses endorsed by the USDA. MADE SAFE is an independent third-party certifier that scrutinizes the materials used in making mattresses to make sure that they are not made with known harmful carcinogens, behavioral, reproductive, and neuro toxins, hormone disruptors, heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides, flame retardants, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs and more! Questionable materials commonly used in mattresses – which[…]

What is Organic Certification?

What is large? Bigger than a mailbox? An elephant? A gymnasium? The word “large” holds no value without a reference point. A sandwich the size of a dachshund is large. An alligator that size is not.  The same holds true for “organic.” Alone, the word “organic” is of questionable value. If you’re trying to sell me a product, I have even more reason to question the value of that word, as it will often be contorted to imply elements that simply are not there. WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN? If a mattress contains “organic” cotton but has a cotton fabric cover treated with a chemical flame retardant, is the mattress organic? What if the mattress is waterproofed with chemicals like PFCs? You probably don’t want a mattress off gassing fair amounts of VOCs regardless of whether there is organic cotton there or not, so how do you know what “organic” actually means on a label? How do you know if the[…]

Naturepedic Crib Mattresses and Accessories Certified To New GREENGUARD “Select” Program

Worried about emissions of potentially toxic fumes into your nursery and other parts of your home? GREENGUARD is an independent organization that tests for emissions. They also offer several different certification programs to manufacturers whose products qualify. Per GREENGUARD, common household products (which would include crib mattresses) release hundreds of potentially harmful chemicals into the air. Poor indoor air quality is linked to asthma, upper respiratory problems and other complications. Naturepedic crib mattresses have been certified by GREENGUARD for the last five years. But there is now a new certification standard called “Select.” In addition to the GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification Program, GREENGUARD’s previously highest standard, Select certification meets the latest scientific and marketing requirements. These include: – Volatile organic compound (VOC) content limits – Lower formaldehyde emissions requirements (driven by California Air Resources Board and California Department of Public Health’s 2012 CA 01350 requirements) – Lead and phthalate content requirements (as defined by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety[…]
