The Trick of the Track: Forest Stewardship Council®/ Rainforest Alliance

Naturepedic seeks the best materials to create comfortable, healthy sleep products. To source such materials, we demand independent certifications: cotton filling certified organic by the USDA, latex certified organic to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), natural wool certified to one or more organic standards. An entire Naturepedic mattress is then certified organic and non-toxic to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Certifications are one of the ways we find the good stuff. There is another important aspect to third-party certifications, though, which concerns what happens to the land and farmers. For example, GOTS and GOLS certifications don’t just mean certified organic. They also mean materials made and harvested responsibly considering worker welfare along the entire supply chain, from the first little spout of a cotton plant to the final manufacturing step in the mattress. In looking at the impact of materials way before they show up in a mattress, Naturepedic has earned Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody[…]

Naturepedic Debuts New Trio Pillow And Mattress Pads

In earlier posts I mentioned Naturepedic’s upcoming display at the massive trade show Las Vegas Market in July. It’s not a show without NEW offerings, so here’s the newest of the new from Naturepedic: Trio We officially launched our Trio washable, customizable organic pillow system. Yes, it really is a customizable pillow, and by customization I don’t mean you can change the pillowcase to a different color. At the core of the Trio is a zippered inner compartment made of organic cotton filled with organic latex. The zipper allows a user to adjust the latex fill to achieve the perfect loft for their individual preference. Covering the inner “pillow” is a super comfy quilted encasement. This gives the cloudlike feel of the Trio. The third level is an organic cotton pillowcase with foldover[…]

The Human Side of Organic Mattresses

Every purchased product, even if mass produced, was made by somebody with materials gathered or processed by real people. Naturepedic always remembers that, even when sourcing materials. I am fortunate to know and interact with the real people who build Naturepedic organic mattresses. Most of the manufacturing team is made up of Amish men and women possessing considerable skills, and it’s impressive to watch these craftspeople build mattresses. With an office just outside of the manufacturing floor, I see the process frequently. That said, although we make our mattresses here in Ohio, even coiling our own springs and then hand assembling them with organic cotton encasements one at a time, we still bring in raw materials like organic cotton, latex, wool and wood. We don’t have our own live sheep at this point. Did you know the organic certifications we offer for our mattresses and materials also take into account the human, animal and environmental impacts related to those materials[…]
