My Resolution? Recycling that mattress!

Have a New Year’s resolution? The state of California does, and is even getting started a few days early.

On December 30, 2015, the new Mattress Recycling Program takes effect. The program requires that all manufacturers, importers, retailers and others selling mattresses in the state of California must be registered for the program by then.

To help fund the mandatory program, mattress sellers in California are required to collect an $11 recycling fee on each mattress separate from the selling price.

California is the third U.S. state to institute a statewide mandatory mattress recycling program. Connecticut’s program began in May 2015, while registration for Rhode Island’s mattress recycling program was in July 2015, with the program expected to begin in 2016.

The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a non-profit industry organization created to run its Bye Bye Mattress programs in states that have enacted mattress recycling laws. For more information on the program, visit
