Organic Beyond Food: Cleaning Supplies

Organic Cleaning Products

Spring has sprung, and that means spring cleaning time! While you’re airing out your house and scrubbing your baseboards (those mythical parts of a house that attract all of the dirt), you might happen to glance at the ingredients label of your household cleaners and think, “Yikes!” Never fear, if you have some unpronounceables in your house, we’re here to help. There are organic and natural alternatives for all your cleaning needs, to fit every budget.

Why Switch?

The American Lung Association highlights several hazards from household chemicals, including eye and throat irritation, headaches, or other issues. Common cleaning supplies can off-gas VOCs, linked to chronic respiratory ailments and allergic reactions. The ALA recommends that people read all labels before buying cleaning supplies and choose options without VOCs, fragrances, irritants, or flammable ingredients.

Making Decisions

In a world of greenwashing labels and false claims, how do you know which brands to trust? We love the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning. This database has information on over 2,000 cleaning supplies and ranks them so you know which products are safe to use and which are better left on the shelf. You can easily search the database for air fresheners, all-purpose cleaners, bathroom and kitchen cleaners, and more.

Recommended Brands

At Naturepedic, we love organic! We have organic soaps in our bathrooms and kitchens and use safe cleaning products to keep the offices and factory in good shape. Here are some brands we love:

Biokleen: Biokleen has excellent ratings from EWG and has cleaners like carpet shampoo, dish soaps, glass cleaner, and all-purpose concentrate for any household cleaning task. We’re fans of anything that can handle multiple jobs instead of needing several separate cleaners!

Dr. Bronner’s: These organic castile soaps are able to be diluted and used to tackle virtually any cleaning project in your home. They use certified fair trade ingredients in all of their soaps and are active in many activism projects such as GMO labeling and animal rights. Certified vegan, cruelty free, and non-GMO.

Seventh Generation: Seventh Gen’s products have a wide range of rankings from EWG, so always check first to make sure you’re getting one of their best products. They have a safe bleach and several safe kitchen and bathroom cleaners to try out! Seventh Generation focuses on creating plant-based products without harsh additives. Not all of their products are organic but they do have an organic line.
