Organic Beyond Food: Mattress & Bedding
May is Better Sleep Month, an informational month-long celebration of healthier sleep habits. Sleep is an important aspect of mental and physical health, and it’s important to understand the impact that our sleep has on our daily life. In our fast-paced busy society, we try to get ahead on our jam-packed schedules by cutting sleep before cutting commitments. We convince ourselves we only need a few hours, or that we’re getting a full night’s sleep even though we catch up on emails in bed or hit snooze for an hour.

How much sleep do we need? The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for adults age 18 to 64. Teenagers and children require even more sleep: eight to ten hours for teens aged 14 to 17, nine to 11 hours for children aged six to 13, and ten to 13 hours for children aged three to five. Babies and toddlers need the most sleep, newborns requiring up to 17 hours, infants up to 15 hours, and toddlers up to 14 hours per night.
It is important to note that these are average values, and you or your child may function best on a little less or a little more sleep than the average. The best way to know how much sleep you need is to find out how much sleep leaves you feeling rested and refreshed without feeling overtired or groggy. If you find yourself reaching for caffeinated beverages throughout the day, you may require more sleep. But too much of a good thing is also possible. Oversleeping can also leave you feeling sluggish and can indicate a number of health concerns such as depression and heart disease.
At Naturepedic, we focus on health and safety in all of our mattress designs in order to help you #RespectYourSleep. Quality of sleep affects the body's immune system, and a lack of sleep impacts health in a number of ways. You're more prone to illness when sleep deprived, and it's also harder to lose weight if you aren't getting adequate sleep.
One of the best ways to improve your sleep is to ensure a safer, healthier sleep environment. Obviously, the most prominent object to address is your mattress! Naturepedic was founded to create a safer baby crib mattress but we’re all grown up now and offer a complete line of mattresses for the entire family. You know and love us for healthier sleep solutions starting with top of the line organic mattresses, without any questionable or potentially harmful chemicals. We start with organic materials like cotton, wool, and latex to handcraft a luxurious mattress that’s just right for your healthy lifestyle.
One of our favorite mattresses is the EOS Organic Sleep System. It allows you to customize the support and comfort layers in your mattress and you can pick a different comfort level for your sleep partner if desired! The EOS is compressed and rolled so that it can be easily shipped to your door via ground shipping, which is more convenient than having to schedule a freight delivery.
An organic mattress is a worthwhile investment for the health of your sleep, but we don’t expect you to run out and replace all your mattresses right away. There are smaller changes you can make to bring organic touches into your sleep environment. Every small change in your life adds up to a healthier way of living.
Naturepedic Organic Accessories
To complete your healthier organic sleep oasis, we offer pillows, sheets, toppers, and protector pads! Even if you can’t switch to an organic mattress, starting with an organic protector pad or topper will place an organic barrier between you and your mattress. Our 100% organic cotton fabric is pure and clean for a healthier rest, and our pillows are available with a variety of fillings ranging from organic cotton and kapok to shredded organic latex. A waterproof protector pad is a must-have to keep your mattress safe from spills and allergens like dust mites.
Conventional cotton is a heavily sprayed crop, while organic cotton is grown without the use of harsh chemical pesticides (which can stick around even after washing). We have some more suggested brands to try out for organic products that will reduce your exposure to pesticides and provide safer, healthier sleep for the whole family.
