Spring has arrived, so many of us are now flocking outdoors as much as possible. Even though you may be limiting your time indoors, don’t forget to keep the air in your home as clean as possible.

In honor of May being Clean Air Month, we challenge you to try at least one of these tips to purify the air in your home.

1. Use Natural Cleaning Products

While trying to clean all the dust and dander in your home, don’t add other irritants. Many conventional cleaning products contain chemicals that can irritate, so try switching to something more natural, such as vinegar, lemon juice or mild soap and water. We share other natural cleaning ideas on our blog as well. Your home will still be clean, and you can breathe easy.

2. Reduce Your Heat/Air Conditioning Usage in Your Home

It’s warming up, so you no longer have to crank up the heat and keep the windows locked up. Reduce your energy usage and let in the fresh air this spring. Your air will be cleaner, and you will be happier with the sun shining in on you.

3. Avoid Running the Car or Lawnmower in the Garage

Whether you are trying to warm up your car or starting your mower, even a small amount of time can produce dangerous amounts of indoor air pollution. It’s not worth the extra minutes. These fumes are not only polluting your air, they can be dangerous for your health.

4. Open the Window or Use Exhaust Vent When Cooking

Cooking with natural gas or with high oven temperatures is one of the top polluters of in-home air. When doing this, open a window and turn on a small fan. If you have an exhaust fan, always use that (and make sure it vents outside).

5. Light Beeswax Candles

You can give your home a nice natural glow without releasing benzene and toluene with conventional candles. Pure beeswax candles are a great alternative because they burn with almost no smoke or scent and neutralize contaminants and remove common allergens.
