Organic Challenge Week 4: Household Items

Welcome to the fourth and final week of our Organic Challenge! This week, we’re focusing on some household item transitions that will dramatically cut down your exposure to toxic chemicals. Many of the chemicals found in the average home have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities. Just like the other Organic Challenge products, many of the chemicals listed below have never been adequately tested for negative health effects. For example, products that kill 50% of lab animals through ingestion or inhalation can still be designated “non-toxic.” The average home today contains 62 toxic chemicals. This is more than a chemistry lab at the turn of the century. We’re here to help you start removing these toxins from your home. Here are our 5 non-negotiable items to trade out to get you moving towards a healthier lifestyle. 1. Cookware Companies that sell cookware are notorious for marketing themselves as “safe” or “clean” when they aren’t. Cookware is[…]

Organic Challenge Week 3: Cleaning Supplies

Welcome to week three of our organic challenge! In the ever changing world of what we should eat or not eat, what we should put on our skin or not put on our skin, and what we should sleep on, there are a few areas in the home which we overlook: cleaning and yard products. We are here to help guide you to make better buying decisions for a happier and healthier life! The first thing to remember is to read labels. At Naturepedic, we are always concerned about companies that use “greenwashing” as a marketing tactic to sell you products. Greenwashing is when companies make unsubstantiated or exaggerated claims about their products being natural, green, eco-friendly, or organic. It’s always important to be leery of companies using these descriptors on their products, and to check for government regulated certifications. If you have questions about what is actually in a product, head over to Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Guide to[…]

Organic Challenge Week 2: Health & Beauty Products

Our skin absorbs 60% of what we put on it. That is a large percentage, especially for women who use, in some cases, 2x the beauty products that men do. Using organic beauty products substantially lowers your exposure to potentially harmful ingredients present in non-organic products. These harmful ingredients include synthetic fragrances, artificial dyes, and toxic chemicals that are associated with endocrine disruption, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other health concerns. Studies have shown that the toxic ingredients in beauty products have been found in biopsy samples from breast tumors, ovarian cancer and more. Many of the chemicals and components that are in our everyday products have not been tested extensively for health affects. The minimal testing that has been done yielded some frightening results, so we’re encouraging you to trade out some of your common beauty products for our non-negotiable beauty products. 1. Deodorant No surprise that conventional deodorants contain toxic chemicals that have been linked to health issues over the[…]

Organic Challenge Week 1: Food

Welcome to week one of our Organic Challenge! This week, we’re focusing on our organic non-negotiables when it comes to food. There are nearly 3,000 chemical additives that find their way into foods that we consume on a daily basis. There are quite a few foods on the Dirty Dozen food list to always buy organic, but these are our top choices! 1. Microwave Popcorn The bag of almost all microwave popcorn is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid, which is the same chemical found in teflon pots and pans and has been linked to infertility, cancer, and other diseases in lab animals. It is listed by the EPA as a carcinogen. Another chemical, known as diacetyl, can cause debilitating respiratory disease. Some brands have discontinued use of these chemicals in their products, but be on the look for them on the ingredients list! 2. Strawberries Non-organic strawberries use chemicals and fertilizers for plant growth, weed control, and to reduce pests and[…]

Are You Up To Our Organic Challenge?

Have you been thinking about switching to a more organic and sustainable lifestyle, but are not sure where to start? Chemicals have made their way into our lives through the food we eat and the products that we use at alarming rates. There are more than 80,000 chemicals produced and used in the United States. Of those 80,000 chemicals, only 200 have been tested (which is less than 1%), and only five have been regulated to any standard. We understand the transition to a healthier lifestyle can be extremely overwhelming. Over the next four weeks, we are going to help guide you in making those healthy decisions that matter the most. We’re challenging you to transition four areas of your day to day life that are affected by chemicals, and give you our non-negotiable organic choices! Are you up to our organic challenge? Week 1: Organic Food May 6 – May 10 Week 2: Organic Beauty May 13 – May[…]

Reasons to Love Sleeping Alone

You’ve heard the saying “slept like a baby,” but have you ever thought about it? Babies sleep peacefully, alone. They don’t have someone in the crib snoring or playing on their phone or watching TV—it’s silent. And the best sleep happens in quiet places. Sometimes there is nothing better than sleeping in a big bed all by yourself. Here are five reasons to love sleeping alone. 1.) Savor the silence. One of the biggest benefits of sleeping alone is the peace and quiet. You don’t have to worry about hearing your partner coughing, sneezing, watching television, or snoring. If you’ve ever slept next to someone who snores, you understand how disruptive it can be. If you’re sleeping next to a snorer, you are losing a half hour of sleep every night, on average. One BSAA study found that snorers cost their partners an average of two years of sleep during the course of a relationship. 2.) Stay cool or warm—it’s[…]

Will Our Crib Mattress Fit Your Crib?

Starting to shop for a crib mattress for your soon-to-arrive bundle of joy? When browsing, you may be surprised to find that from brand to brand cribs don’t just differ aesthetically. In fact, there is no set crib mattress size! If you have already purchased a crib, you can’t just blindly choose a mattress to accompany it. The number one thing to look for when choosing your child’s crib mattress is safety. So when choosing a crib mattress to safely fit inside your baby’s crib, look for a model that will pass the recommended two-finger measurement test between crib and mattress. We know we can’t pass this test for every crib with our crib mattress. But when designing our crib mattress, we do seek to fit in as many cribs as possible so your baby can have their safest, healthiest sleep. That’s why we look at the industry minimum and maximum sizes for cribs and crib mattresses and design our[…]
