Weighted Blankets and Insomnia – What’s the Deal with Weighted Blankets?

We’ve all had those sleepless nights—the ones when you lay awake, unable to turn your mind off no matter how hard you try. And then it gets to a point where you think “OK, if I fall asleep right now, I can still get five hours of sleep,” but then you stay awake for another hour, and then another hour. It’s a vicious cycle that only leads to one thing: insomnia. If stress and anxiety hit you hardest at night, we may have a suggestion that could help calm you down and salvage your sleep. Have you ever heard of a weighted blanket? It’s a pretty cool concept, really. People who use them explain that it feels like someone is hugging them to sleep (how cute is that?) So what is it? A weighted blanket ranges between 5-25 lbs and should be chosen based on your own weight. The general rule of thumb is to choose a blanket that is[…]

The Naturepedic Organic Mattress Gallery Experience

As you know, there is a lot to consider when making a big purchase. And when we say “big” we’re talking about all of the more expensive adult purchases you make—car, house, etc. It’s all of the purchases that will help you live, grow, or build. We consider them investments. Think about it. When you buy a house, you’re investing in your future and the future of your family. A home is more than a roof over your head—it’s your safe haven. It’s where memories are built. When you purchase a car, you’re investing in your personal and professional well-being. When you purchase a mattress, you’re investing in your health. And we want to help you make the best investment possible. According to HelpGuide.org, the average adult (age 18-64) should be sleeping 7-9 hours every night. If you sleep an average of 8 hours per night, you’re spending 54 hours of your week in bed—that’s roughly 2,912 hours per year.[…]

How Stress And Sleep Affect One Another

Let’s talk about stress and sleep. Stress has a way of sneaking into every part of your life. When you’re stressed, it affects you both mentally and physically—even if you don’t realize it. Stress can live in your subconscious and can manifest itself in physical ways, including while you sleep. This is especially troubling because if you don’t sleep well, you don’t get the full benefits of sleep which will leave you feeling groggy and lethargic. It’s also discouraging because it starts a cycle—the more stress you feel, the less sleep you get, and that lack of sleep is a natural stressor. Stress and Sleep – The Facts According to a survey published by the American Psychological Association: American adults report sleeping an average of 6.7 hours a night—less than the minimum recommendation of seven to nine hours. In addition, 42% of adults report that their sleep quality is fair or poor and 43% report that stress has caused them[…]

A Short History of Sleep: Now & Then

It’s always fun to sit back and look at how things have changed over the years, isn’t it? We get so caught up in the daily grind that we don’t usually make time to reflect on how things used to be. Do you remember life before the internet? Life before GPS? Did you ever have to wait until 7pm to get your local news on TV? Reminiscing can be fun, and it can be a reminder of how far we have come. We’re taking a stroll down memory lane to explore the history of sleep and see how far we have come when understanding sleep patterns, studying changes in sleep, and interesting sleep facts. Fun Fact: Did you know that as recent as the 19th century, physicians believed that sleep was caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain? A lot of discoveries have been made in a relatively short time. Keep reading to find out more. The[…]

Let’s Talk Breathability For Baby

The Naturepedic story began when a grandpa & Board Certified Engineer, our co-founder Barry Cik, wanted a safer crib mattress for his first grandson. So when we say that we take safety seriously, you know that we mean it. There are many things to consider when creating a safe place for babies to sleep, and we go the extra mile to make sure it’s done correctly. Unlike some crib mattresses, Naturepedic designs a breathable baby mattress the right way. There are two ways to make a breathable mattress. One way is to remove the waterproofing and to have baby breathe into the interior of the mattress. The problem with this approach is that urine, bigger messes, vomit, and even just spilled milk will also go through the non-waterproof surface and get into the interior. The baby will be breathing into this contaminated space. The better design is to have a breathable pad that’s fully breathable for the baby but where[…]

Flame Retardants: Friends or Foes?

Once upon a time, furniture and textiles were made using natural materials. Couches, mattresses, rugs, curtains—they all consisted of materials found in nature. “When you walked into a house back then, almost everything was natural,”  says Barry Cik, environmental engineer and co-founder of Naturepedic. “But now? Nothing is natural.” What changed? Where did we go wrong? Why did companies stop using natural materials? If you’re into pointing fingers or placing blame, you can (fairly) point towards petroleum and money. “Companies started adding petroleum to almost everything. Natural fibers aren’t nearly as flammable, but petroleum is much cheaper.” Check out this video to see the difference between a modern home fire with petroleum-based furnishings and a legacy home fire with more natural furnishings: Petroleum can be found in TV cabinets, plastic wood, detergents, paint, toilet seats, furniture, etc. (Click here for a list of more petroleum-based products that may shock you.) Because it is common in so many products, America saw[…]

Mattress Label: The Accurate Labeling Act

We understand our consumers. Most of the people who love the Naturepedic brand are health-conscious and appreciate transparency, especially when it comes to making purchases and our own mattress label. When we find information that could help our friends make the best possible decisions for their own families, we feel that it is our responsibility to share that information. It has been brought to our attention that a new bill will soon be voted on—The Accurate Labels Act (H.R. 6022.) The Accurate Labels Act is introduced and sponsored by Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R) – Ill. The Overview of the proposed bill states: To amend the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act to require that Federal and State mandated information declarations and labeling requirements applicable to the chemical composition of, and radiation emitted by, consumer products meet minimum scientific standards to deliver accurate and clear information, and for other purposes. At a time when consumers are demanding more transparency when it comes[…]

Remember how much fun it was to be a teenager and eat a large order of fries and chug a milkshake and still be able to fit into skinny jeans because our metabolisms were living up to their full potentials? There are dozens of reasons to avoid making changes. “I don’t have the time.” “Money is tight.” “I’m not home enough.” As valid as our reasons may be, it’s important to remember that if we don’t prioritize our health, the rest doesn’t really matter. We have to be good to ourselves before you can be good for anyone else. We want to stick around for the long haul. We want to be active. We want to make better choices and take better care of ourselves. So where do we begin? We know it can be difficult to commit to the healthy lifestyle. It requires research, meal prep, fitness, and possible budget adjustments. Figuring out how to start your new journey[…]
