Why Third-Party Standards Matter

“It’s not organic unless it’s certified organic.” -Barry Cik, Naturepedic Founder & Environmental Engineer

Most mattresses don’t come with an ingredient list. In an industry where products can contain flame retardants, fiberglass, phthalates, and formaldehyde — and where terms like “natural” and even “organic” are often used loosely in marketing — that matters. That’s why Naturepedic was built on a different standard, one rooted in our founder’s conviction that unless we can prove a claim, we shouldn’t make it.

Every certification you see here offers third-party validation that helps us verify how we make our products, what materials we use, and why you can trust us to help you create a healthier home where you can truly feel well rested.

Are Naturepedic Mattresses Really Organic?

Yes! Naturepedic products are certified to some of the industry's most rigorous standards, and we’ve been proving it longer than any other mattress brand:

  • One of the first GOTS-certified mattress brands (2009)
  • First MADE SAFE® certified mattress brand (2016)
  • First FSC®-certified mattress brand (2019)
  • First EWG Verified® mattress brand (2024)
  • First & only mattress brand to be UL Validated for Non-Detectable PFAS (2025, crib & kids mattresses)
  • Entire manufacturing facility is GOTS certified (not just products)

Our Organic & Nontoxic Certifications Explained

No single certification evaluates everything that makes a product better for you, for its growers and makers, and for the Earth. Some focus on organic sourcing and traceability, while others assess ingredient safety, responsible forestry, or animal welfare practices. Together, our certifications build a more complete system of accountability for you and your family.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

If you want to know whether a mattress is actually organic (not just marketed as such), GOTS is the certification to look for. Recognized by the USDA and widely considered the world’s leading standard for organic non-food products, GOTS verifies 95% organic fiber content, responsible processing, and fair labor practices across the entire supply chain. Naturepedic has been GOTS certified since 2009 and was one of the first brands to achieve this standard. Not only are Naturepedic products GOTS certifiedour entire factory is, too!

Organic Content Standard (OCS)

When a product says it contains organic cotton, how do you know that claim is real? As a tracking certification, OCS provides that assurance. It only accepts fiber from certified organic farms and follows the chain of custody from raw material all the way to the finished product you receive. Third-party audits at every step ensure there’s no substitution, dilution, or mislabeling along the way. Naturepedic’s OCS certification means the organic fibers in our products have been independently traced and verified from seed to sleep.

EWG Verified: Mattresses

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is the organization behind the Skin Deep® cosmetics database, which is trusted by millions of consumers who want to know what’s really in their products. EWG Verified brings that same rigorous scrutiny to mattresses. It flags ingredients with potential health risks, requires full material disclosure, and holds manufacturers to responsible production practices. Naturepedic is the first mattress brand to become EWG Verified — an industry benchmark we set in 2024.

MADE SAFE

For families making health-conscious purchasing decisions, the MADE SAFE certification provides a meaningful level of assurance that a product has been made with safe ingredients. That’s because MADE SAFE screens products against a restricted ingredient list of 15,000+ known and suspected harmful substances, including carcinogens, neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors, and environmental toxicants. Naturepedic was the first mattress brand to achieve this distinction when the certification launched in 2016.

GREENGUARD Gold

You spend roughly a third of your life breathing the air directly above your mattress. GREENGUARD Gold certification, administered by Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL), tests for chemical emissions, helping you to avoid the kind of off-gassing that can affect indoor air quality and accumulate in enclosed sleeping environments. Naturepedic mattresses, pillows, toppers, duvet inserts, and furniture meet GREENGUARD Gold standards — just one more way we provide No Compromise® organic sleep.

UL Formaldehyde Free

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can be present in adhesives, resins, and finishing treatments commonly used in mattress and furniture manufacturing. Naturepedic products have earned UL’s Formaldehyde Free validation, which is an independent, test-based verification that our materials meet UL’s rigorous requirements for the absence of formaldehyde emissions.

UL Non-Detectable PFAS Validated

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sometimes called “forever chemicals,” are widely used in waterproofing treatments across the mattress industry and have been linked to serious health concerns. Naturepedic’s crib mattresses and the 2-in-1 Organic Kids Mattress are the first and only to earn UL’s Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) for Non-Detectable PFAS. We achieve effective waterproofing through food-grade polyethylene or GOTS-allowed TPU, not PFAS chemistry.

Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)

If you’re choosing a mattress, pillow, or topper that contains latex, the source of that latex matters. The Global Organic Latex Standard verifies that latex is of certified organic origin, processed responsibly, and traceable from the farm where the rubber tree sap was harvested to processing and storage facilities and all the way to Naturepedic’s organic products. Additionally, Naturepedic’s GOLS latex meets the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 via our trusted suppliers.

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a global, not-for-profit organization whose certification ensures that wood and latex-producing forests are managed to protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and the workers and communities who depend on them. Naturepedic was the first mattress brand to earn FSC certification in 2019. Look for the FSC logo on our site to identify certified products. And, rest assured that our FSC latex also meets the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1.

Responsible Wool Standard (RWS)

If you want the comfort of wool but are concerned for the welfare of the sheep, look for an RWS-certified brand. RWS is an international voluntary standard that ensures the sheep are treated humanely and the land they graze on is protected through responsible grazing practices. As an RWS-certified brand, Naturepdic uses wool that reflects a commitment to ethical and sustainable practices throughout the entire supply chain.

Responsible Down Standard (RDS)

Down and feathers are among the most commonly misrepresented materials in the bedding industry. The Responsible Down Standard addresses this directly: it prohibits the inhumane treatment of ducks and geese, requires traceability from farm to finished product, and includes independent third-party audits at every stage of the supply chain. Naturepedic is RDS certified as a brand, so you can trust that our down products offer comfort that is not in conflict with compassion. (Please note that some down products may be IDS certified.)

Responsible Alpaca Standard (RAS)

Alpaca is a luxury fiber chosen deliberately — by consumers who care about what goes into their products. That’s why Naturepedic sources ours in alignment with the Responsible Alpaca Standard (RAS), certified by Control Union. This standard offers peace of mind by independently verifying that our alpaca comes from farms meeting documented standards for animal welfare, responsible land management, and fair working conditions.
