These are questions that most of us probably don’t know the answer to and many wouldn’t even think to ask. You spend a third of your life sleeping, but what’s in a mattress? At Naturepedic, we believe you have a right to know – and that the answer to that question should bring you comfort (literally and figuratively!). 

Our Farm to Bed philosophy is our way of connecting you to the origins of the organic materials in our mattresses. It’s a story that begins on organic cotton farms right in the USA and ends in the comfort of your bedroom. 

In this blog, we’ll take you through the journey of our organic cotton, and along the way, you’ll see how transparency, sustainability, quality and health come together to create the Naturepedic difference.

Every Naturepedic mattress starts with farmers who care about the Earth as much as we do. We’re serious about transparency, which means we know exactly where our organic cotton fill comes from and how it’s grown. By working directly with organic cotton farmers, we can skip the middlemen and give you peace of mind. You’ll know that every fiber in your mattress is part of a story you can trust, from the field to your home. It’s not just a promise – it’s how we do business.

Our cotton farmers follow the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the gold standard in organic textiles. This means no harmful pesticides, no GMOs, no synthetic fertilizers – just pure, high-quality cotton. Our farmers adhere to the standard with a range of techniques, such as:

• Natural pest control
• Organic soil amendments
• Crop rotation

This organic commitment not only protects the health of farm workers and their communities but also provides our customers with peace of mind, knowing exactly what you’re sleeping on. Because our Farm to Bed philosophy is about more than just mattresses – it’s about people. 

Organic farming is better for the environment, for the farmers, for their families and for yours. Plus, by sourcing organic cotton fill from U.S. farms, we don’t just support local agriculture – we reduce transportation emissions. 

Sustainability doesn’t stop at the farm. Once harvested, our organic cotton undergoes processing in facilities that meet GOTS’s high environmental standards. At the cotton gin, our organic cotton is handled with care to preserve its natural purity – in fact, the entire facility shuts down before organic cotton is processed to ensure that every machine is thoroughly cleaned so that no chemicals from conventional cotton are left behind.

After the ginning process, conventional cotton milling and fabrication usually involves harsh chemical dyes and finishes, but not organic cotton. And because organic cotton isn’t treated with harsh chemicals, that means that it doesn’t leach those same harsh chemicals back into the environment at the end of its life cycle. It’s as gentle on the planet as it is on your skin!

At our GOTS certified factory, we prioritize cleaner manufacturing processes – even our packaging is eco-friendlier, because every choice matters when it comes to protecting the planet. Plus, our adaptable designs for Baby, Kids and Adult are crafted to grow with your family, encouraging mindful consumption and helping you do your part, too.

This is partly because organic farming prioritizes the health of the plant, resulting in longer, stronger fibers. Moreover, conventional cotton often undergoes extensive chemical treatments – pest control, bleaching, dyeing and finishing – that can stiffen fibers, leave residues, and compromise both softness and breathability. Organic cotton farming and processing, on the other hand, avoids these chemicals as much as possible, preserving the integrity of the fibers.

Your home should be your safe haven, and your mattress plays a big role in that. Unfortunately, many conventional mattresses are full of chemicals that can affect your air quality and your health. Polyurethane foam. Fiberglass. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Formaldehyde. Phthalates. Pesticides. Boric acid. Antimony. Vinyl. PVC. Isocyanates. Melamine resin. At Naturepedic, we do things differently. Our organic cotton is grown and processed without harmful pesticides, GMOs or harsh chemical treatments, per GOTS. That means no flame retardants, no heavy metal dyes – just cleaner, safer materials that you can feel good about.

Our Farm to Bed philosophy doesn’t stop at our organic cotton, either. Our RWS- and GOTS-certified organic wool is sourced from organic farms that prioritize animal welfare and sustainable land management. We also use GOLS- and FSC®- certified latex, derived from the sap of rubber trees growing in sustainably managed forests.
