Designing An Organic Kids Room

By Lisa Janvrin, YouthfulNest

I’m super excited to share this kid’s room design, how hip and cool is this spot for a young boy? Simply swap out a few items and you’ve got a room that works for a tween or even teen. But that’s not the best part, we have carefully curated furnishings and décor that are organic and better for both people and the environment.

All pieces were selected with the intention of creating a healthier living space – naturally, we used the Naturepedic Verse Organic Kids Mattress as our inspiration and jumping off point.

Designing An Organic Kids Room

The Naturepedic Verse Organic Kids Mattress is an exemplary kid’s room product, the entire finished mattress is GOTS certified organic! As a premium mattress of course it provides a firm support, best for a growing child or teen. In addition, it goes above and beyond to ensure safe healthy sleep inside and out. From organic cotton filling to the quilted exterior made without common allergens, flame retardant chemicals or any other questionable materials – this is an essential base for your child’s better night’s sleep.

Fortunately, these days more and more brands are listing very specific product and environmental attributes on their website. This makes it easier to determine if a product fits your room goals. It is more common than ever to find kid’s products made of organic materials, even from the large retailers.

Not only can we learn from a product description if something is organic, but it is now common to learn whether products are chemical-free, untreated, non VOC, or eco-friendly.

We also incorporated many other pieces that are made from mostly organic, chemical–free, recycled, untreated, natural or sustainable materials. Or they can even be recycled themselves. Like the NYC-YouthfulNest Skyline Mural Stencil that is printed on recyclable paper templates. We always recommend Colorhouse paint to create your custom wall mural for their commitment to healthier and sustainable products.

Not all product descriptions are created equal. Here are some common manufacturing terms you will see in product details:

No Off-Gassing:

Off-gassing takes place when new, manufactured products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals into the air. During the production process, products inhale gaseous chemicals. When these products are unwrapped, they exhale this harmful gas into our homes. More Info.

Zero or Low VOC:

VOC stands for, Volatile Organic Compounds and are often found in paints, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. More Info.

Non-Toxic:

This term is mainly a marketing–term. And unless other qualifying details and certifications are listed in the product description has little meaning. More Info.

Organic:

Simply put, all or almost all of the ingredients have been grown and processed under very strict conditions. If the product is “100% organic,” everything in that product was grown with no pesticides, no fertilizers, no herbicides, no antibiotics, no growth hormones, no GMOs. Note, different organic certifications are given to a product based on qualifying factors. More Info.

Natural:

This is a broad, unregulated term. Look for 100% natural fibers which are made from natural materials, or products produced from a living organism, such as a plant or animal. They don’t need to be re-formed or chemically altered in order to be used as a fiber. But this doesn’t mean they are chemical free so read your product descriptions carefully or ask the manufacturer. More Info.

Sustainable – Renewable Resources:

These are products made from materials that replenish themselves naturally over time and minimize their environmental impact. They may also be products made from recycled or reusable materials. More Info.

In addition to the positive health and environmental benefits of a kid’s room that has been “detoxed” – choosing natural materials means increased durability. So while you may pay a bit more for some items, they will last longer than most synthetic materials. Ideal for a kid’s room.
